NYC Transit Contract to Go to Arbitration

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- The contract dispute involving New York City's subway and bus workers will go to binding arbitration, a state agency decided Thursday.þþThe Metropolitan Transportation Authority has sought binding arbitration, in which a neutral party issues a decision that can't be appealed. The union has opposed it.þþThe state Public Employment Relations Board, which voted to refer the dispute to an arbitration panel, is a mediating agency.þþTransport Workers Union Local 100, which represents 33,000 members, narrowly rejected a contract proposal by the MTA in January.þþAn illegal 60-hour strike, which began Dec. 20, shut down all subway and metro bus lines and hobbled the city during the holiday shopping rush.þþ
