The union representing about 16,000 workers at New York-area grocery chains reached a contract agreement with the stores, averting a strike, the union said in a statement. Local 1500 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union reached an agreement with the chains — Pathmark Stores, Stop and Shop and King Kullen — on Friday, the union said in a statement. Neither union nor market representatives were available yesterday for comment. The workers plan to hold a ratification vote within 10 days, the statement said. The contract affects workers in New York City, Long Island and Westchester, Dutchess and Putnam Counties.þþ
