Transportation Screeners Can Unionize, Board Says

  • 06-30-2006
The National Labor Relations Board ruled, 4 to 1, that airport screeners who work for a private company have the right to unionize, rejecting the argument that such workers should not be able to unionize because they work in national security. The Transportation Security Administration has barred federally employed screeners from unionizing. The employees in the case work for Firstline Transportation Security and inspect baggage at Kansas City International Airport. The board's majority wrote, ÿFor 60 years, in times of both war and peace, the board has asserted jurisdiction over employers and employees that have been involved in national security and defense.ÿþþ
