Truck Maker and U.A.W. Reach Deal

WARRENVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The International Truck and Engine Corporation reached a tentative agreement Wednesday with the United Automobile Workers’ leadership on three-year contracts for 3,700 striking workers, the company said.þþU.A.W. members were expected to vote this weekend on the agreement, details of which were not publicly disclosed. If approved by a majority of those voting, the contracts would replace five-year agreements that expired Oct. 1.þþA U.A.W. spokesman, Larry Sharp, president of Local 6 in Melrose Park, Ill., confirmed the agreement but declined to make further comments because specifics of the deal were not available.þþWorkers at local unions in six states have been on strike against the company since Oct. 23, complaining of unfair labor practices.þþInternational Truck and Engine, a unit of Navistar International, shifted customer orders to its other locations to keep production going.þþThe U.A.W. represents employees at nine International Truck and Engine facilities in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Ind.; Melrose Park, Ill.; Springfield, Ohio; York, Pa.; Atlanta; and Dallas.þþ
