How Far Afield Are Job Seekers Willing to Go?

When assessing the health of the economy, economists normally look at such markers as spending, growth and unemployment. They might also want to look at what could be called the “career complacency” index. þþAccording to a survey by the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, the percentage of job seekers who switched industries last year was 39.8 percent, compared with 43 percent the year before.þþThe percentage could rise as the housing slump and credit collapse begin to affect the job market. John A. Challenger, chief executive of Challenger, said in a statement: “We could see an escalation in industry switching as job seekers attempt to improve their odds of success by casting a wider net.”þþBut people working in education, energy, health care and security may not need to worry about scrambling to learn a new field. Challenger has included these among the industries that will be most resistant to a recession. þþ
