HONOLULU (AP) -- A tentative contract agreement has been reached with a union representing 4,000 workers who had threatened to strike at five hotels along Hawaii's famed Waikiki beach.þþThe settlement with Local 5 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union at the Hilton Hawaiian Village came Sunday, union spokesman Jason Ward said.þþThe agreement is the same the union reached Saturday with owners of four Sheraton hotels: the Sheraton Waikiki, Princess Ka'iulani, Sheraton Moana Surfrider and The Royal Hawaiian.þþThe proposed pact would give housekeepers and other workers who do not make tips, who currently make $15 per hour, a wage increase of $1.60 per hour over four years. Employees who do make tips would get 45 cents per hour in increases over the same period.þþThe agreement also would allow hotel workers to keep their jobs if a hotel is sold, said Eric Gill, Local 5's financial secretary-treasurer.þ
