ATLANTA, May 14 (Bloomberg News) — United Parcel Service workers represented by the Teamsters will vote this weekend on giving their leaders authority to call a strike if necessary, as the union tries to speed up contract talks. þþResults of the vote will be announced next week, the union said today in a message to its members. þþU.P.S. wants to avoid a repeat of a 15-day strike in August 1997 that cost it $750 million in lost revenue and interrupted shipments to thousands of businesses. þþA U.P.S. spokesman, Norman Black, said today that the strike vote did not reflect any problem in the talks, adding that there had been substantial progress.þþ
