California Enacts $15 Minimum Wage

  • 04-05-2016
Gov. Jerry Brown of California signed a bill on Monday that would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2022, placing the state at the center of a closely watched economics experiment.þþ“This is about economic justice,” Mr. Brown said before signing the legislation. “It’s about people. It’s about creating a little, tiny balance in a system that every day becomes more unbalanced.”þþThe bill was approved last week by the Democratic-controlled Legislature.þþWhile the bill is intended as a way to raise living standards, observers say they will keep a close eye on unemployment rates. Business groups say the increase will lead to thousands of job cuts.þþAlso on Monday, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York approved a $15 minimum wage for New York City by the end of 2018, with slower increases elsewhere in the state.
