Building Workers' Union Votes Unanimously to Strike

Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union represents 1,400 workers in 500 apartment buildings and condominiums in Westchester and Rockland counties.þþMore than 600 members of the local building workers' union voted unanimously on Thursday night to walk off the job if they do not have a new contract with management by Sept. 30. þþLocal 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, which represents nearly 1,400 workers in more than 500 buildings in Westchester and Rockland counties, took the vote at the Westchester County Center following months of stagnant negotiations.þþÿWe will stand strong for all the things that make it possible to live and work in the expensive Hudson Valley,ÿ 32BJ President Hector Figueroa told the members. ÿAffordable health care, retirement security and a sensible raise so our families can keep up with the cost of living.ÿ þþThe union has been negotiating with building management since Aug. 15 but the two sides have not come close to a deal. If the union does strike, it will be 32BJ's first time walking off the job in more than 30 years. þþThe union represents building superintendents, porters, maintenance workers and other service employees in apartment buildings and condominium complexes. þþThursday's vote authorizes the union's bargaining committee to walk away from negotiations and call for a work stoppage if they don't reach a deal with management.þþþþ
