GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A vote is now underway to decide if the grocery workers union will authorize a strike.þþThe grocers union is voting in six different meetings today and tomorrow to either accept the most recent deal by City Market / King Soopers - or authorize a strike.þþThe union claims the current proposal would offer no pay raises over the next three years -- and would also decrease benefits that come with higher healthcare costs, both of which the company denies.þþThey say they're increasing wages and continuing to invest in their workers healthcare at no additional cost.þþAfter the grocery giant left the negotiation table last week, both sides of the showdown are taking further steps to prepare for a work stoppage.þþWe spoke with a City Market employee last week, who told us a strike is a very real possibility.þþSince that interview, workers walking off seems even more likely.þþCity Market is taking applications for temp workers who would be paid 15 dollars an hour and are making it public that their union employees are preparing to walk off the job.þþThe union will decide by the end of the week if they will authorize a strike or not, although they do mention that even with approval, it might be some time until workers actually walk off the job.
