  • 04-30-2019
Union members at Hilton Hawaiian Village have voted to authorize a strike.þþLocal hospitality and healthcare union Unite Here Local 5 announced Friday that 91 percent of its members at Hilton Hawaiian Village voted in favor of a strike. The vote comes following negotiations between the company and 1,700 hotel workers. According to a statement by the Unite Here Local 5, issues in the negotiation include workload and wages, specifically for workers at the property’s timeshare towers.þþ“I’m voting yes because one job should be enough,” said Lani Rivera, a housekeeper at the Grand Islander Timeshare Tower, in a statement. “We deserve better pay because our jobs are hard; we clean bigger rooms with kitchens — one timeshare room can take up to four hours to clean.”þþOther issues that workers are hoping to address include subcontracting, technology and automation, job safety and job elimination.þþContract negotiations were set to resume Monday and Tuesday.þþ
