Union Representing Macy’s Workers Votes to Authorize Strike

A strike is looming at Macy’s stores in parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.þþAfter four months of contract negotiations, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445 voted Sunday to authorize a strike if necessary. The union represents more than 1,000 Macy’s employees in Boston, Braintree, Natick, Peabody and Warwick, Rhode Island.þþLocal 1445 said it is fighting for more money for its workers and affordable healthcare, and will move to strike if an agreement isn’t reached soon.þþThis isn’t the first time the union has voted to authorize a strike in recent months.þþIn April, tens of thousands of Stop & Shop employees throughout New England walked off the job during an 11-day strike, which cost the company an estimated $100 million.þþAn agreement was eventually reached between the union and Stop & Shop that gave workers higher pay and continued health care coverage and retirement benefits.þþ
