May 23, 2019 — The aluminum giant Alcoa is facing a possible strike by workers at its plant in Massena.þþAccording to the Watertown Daily Times, members of the United Steelworkers union will vote this Friday on whether to authorize a strike. That comes after contract negotiations broke down with Alcoa and Arconic. Which also operates at the plant in Massena.þþMore than 400 union members are now working without a contract.þþUnion officials told WWNY-TV they’re not happy with the companies’ proposal to freeze pensions and move workers to a cheaper retirement plan.þþAlcoa and Arconic are some of the last manufacturers left in the Massena area. The companies recently agreed to keep 600 jobs at the aluminum plant in exchange for cheap power and other incentives.þþAccording to WWNY, the last big strike at Alcoa was more than 30 years ago.
