Contract Ends Strike at Lockheed Martin

FORT WORTH, April 27 (AP) — Union workers at the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company approved a three-year contract today, ending a two-week strike called to gain better wages and lower insurance costs.þþMembers of the union, Machinists Local 776, approved the contract by a vote of 2,192 to 554. Representatives of the 4,000-member local and Lockheed Martin had agreed early Saturday to the contract proposal.þþThe strike began on April 14 after union members rejected a proposal with wage increases that some said would be largely nullified by higher health care costs.þþLockheed Martin, based in Bethesda, Md., builds F-16 fighter jets at its Fort Worth plant, which is the second-largest employer in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.þþ
