Safeway Reaches Tentative Agreement with Union Hours Before Planned Strike Vote

On the brink of holding a strike vote, Workers' union UFCW Local 400 have announced they reached a tentative agreement with Safeway.þþThe tentative agreement comes after six months of negotiations, according to the union. The proposed contract will be revealed to union workers on Thursday afternoon.þþWe are recommending our members vote in favor of both offers, and if a majority of members do so, the new contracts will take effect shortly after the meeting.þA statement from the union, however, highlights the following pension and wage changes:þþIncreasing company pension contributions by $18.6 million per year, or $74.4 million over the four-year life of the contractþ$49.5 million in overall wage increases over the four-year life of the contract:þYear 1 – wage increase by $4.0 MillionþYear 2 – wage increase by $8.8 MillionþYear 3 – wage increase by $15.3 MillionþYear 4 – wage increase by $21.4 MillionþThe announcement will be made at 1 p.m at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center.þþIn February, Giant and Workers' union UFCW Local 400 reached a tentative agreement. Workers of both grocery stores will vote today on whether or not to accept their respective agreements.
