Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition endorses 3-day strike

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition has endorsed a call for a three-day strike.þþAccording to a press release from the IGWC, the call was endorsed at a general membership meeting on Sunday. All 1,300 members of the union will now vote on the strike.þþIGWC reported that the strike could start as soon as Wednesday.þþ“It seems that the policy of Indiana University is an absolute silence when it comes to discussingþwages, benefits, and working conditions with the organization that graduate employees haveþchosen as their representative,” Jakob Myers, a Ph.D. student in History, said via release. “Frankly, it’s a shameful stance for a major educational institution.þþIn January, IGWC submitted 1,300 union cards to Indiana University President Pamela Whitten, per a release. IGWC also asked IU to hold a union election and bargain with the union.þþThe union indicated that its correspondence was not answered by university officials.þþIGWC led a four-week strike of graduate workers in 2022. That strike resulted in IU raising yearly minimum salaries for graduate workers from $15,000 to $22,000, per a release.
