  • 08-02-2024
JACKSON, Miss. —þJTRAN and union workers are threatening to strike by Aug. 18 if their demands are not met by the company that manages them.þþAccording to Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, MV Transportation manages JTRAN employees.þþAmalgamated Transit Union President Charles Tornes said some of the issues employees are expressing include being punished for calling out due to sickness, drivers not having uniform allowances and some even using second-hand uniforms.þþTornes said there are issues with pay.þþMayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba responded to these concerns on his YouTube talk show ÿAsk Antar,ÿ saying, ÿI was made aware that there was some friction between the management company and the union for the drivers, and I met with both sides. First I met with them individually to gain their perspective of what the challenges were, and then I recently met with both sides together.ÿþþHe added, ÿI believe that they're really not that far apart.ÿþþThe mayor is hopeful that a resolution is on the rise.þþÿI believe that if resolution can be made on that one particular challenge, and I'm being vague, I'm being intentionally vague, only for opportunity for the sides to negotiate and come to resolution,ÿ he said.þþIn a statement from Torne, Torne said nothing has been changed at this time.þþTorne also said that the city and MV Transportation have been given a 30-day notice of another strike.þþTornes told 16 WAPT that notice was given on July 18, leaving MV Transportation to respond by Aug. 18 or face another strike.
