PERRYVILLE — Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge I460, District 4 voted Friday to continue their strike against IKEA.
Specifically the workers went on strike Nov. 15 against the distribution center in Perryville, seeking wages that keep pace with the economy and mirror the success of the Swedish furniture company.
David Sullivan, IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President, said the strike also is an effort to protect long time employees from favoritism, with the goal of a just and respectful workplace.
“The company has to return with an offer that most members can get behind. One day longer, one day stronger is our mantra as we fight for justice at the bargaining table," Sullivan said in a union statement issued Saturday.
This IAM local has more than 330 members, who have been taking turns picketing along Marion Tapp Parkway near the entrance to the distribution center.
"Our members are holding the line at IKEA," Sullivan said.
It hasn't been without issue, as one striker was arrested at the picket line Dec. 17 and charged with six misdemeanors including hindering a passageway, intoxicated public disturbance, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Joshua Westcott, from Conowingo, has a Jan. 15 trial date.
A strike was averted in 2015 when the members and management agreed ahead of a deadline to a contract that addressed pay, scheduling and hours among other issues. Two years later a three-year agreement was signed, again avoiding picket lines.
The union was chartered at IKEA in 2012. At that time it represented 460 workers.
