Verizon's Protest of Union Ad Is Overruled

An arbitrator has ruled against an effort by Verizon Communications to block a union from placing advertisements accusing a unit of the company of unfair practices. þþThe newspaper ads do not violate an agreement between the Communications Workers of America, a union representing about 60,000 Verizon employees whose contracts are being negotiated, and Verizon Wireless, the arbitrator, Edwin Benn, said in a ruling. þþÿTo grant the temporary restraining order would disserve the public's interest in allowing the collective bargaining process to run its course,ÿ Mr. Benn said.þþVerizon Wireless, which is based in Bedminster, N.J., and the union have a neutrality agreement that outlines procedures the union can use in organizing workers.þþThe union, which represents about 50 workers at Verizon Wireless, has sought a freer hand in recruiting members at the division. þþVerizon said in the complaint to the arbitrator that the union violated that agreement through ads, placed in The Washington Post and in The New York Times, contending that the wireless division was threatening workers.þþ
